‘Favre Fever’ sends Jets’ tickets flying

The New York Post reported recently that the resale of New York Jets tickets on the Internet have taken off since the blockbuster trade for superstar quarterback Brett Favre took place.

The Post reports that fans are flocking to the Web because 2008 Jet tickets have long been sold out to season-ticket holders. Yet the trade has prompted more than 2,000 fans to download applications for placement on their season-ticket waiting list - already held about 10,000 names before the deal.

New York’s Action 2 News also reported seeing an increased requests for football tickets for New York Jets games after checking with several ticket brokers. Prices are also ballooning for Jets tickets as they have increased up 50 percent.

NBA Finals: Celtics ticket lottery leaves fans dejected as ticket prices soar

The Boston Globe is reporting that people went as far as sleeping in garbage cans as they waited in line to buy tickets for the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

The tickets have become priceless and are selling online for thousands of dollars and the average price for tickets for this year’s series was selling at $262 more than last year’s San Antonio Spurs-Cleveland Cavaliers championship.

The tickets went on sale on Monday morning and thousands of fans were lining up outside the TD Banknorth Garden to get the coveted tickets.

Shawn Sullivan, the Celtics vice president of ticket sales, told the Boston Globe that while the Garden has capacity for 18,624 people, the vast majority of tickets went to season ticket holders, sponsors, the National Basketball Association, TV networks, and the visiting team.

According to the Boston Herald the box office opened at about 2 p.m. and the nearly 1,000 available seats, which were also being sold at the same time online and by phone, were gone by 3:20 p.m.

Also the system that the Celtics employ to sell their tickets left many fans dejected. The Garden uses a lottery system to determine who among the crowd of people waiting to get tickets will be able to buy them. As people line up they are handed a ticket with a number indicating their place in line.

Security guards closed off the line on Monday at 1 p.m. . Then a Garden employee drew the “271” ticket from a box, so the ticket sale started there. Everyone ahead of that point, even though they had arrived earlier, went home empty handed.

John Wentzell, president of TD Banknorth Garden, told the Boston Herald that the venue has used the lottery for all major events, including sports playoff games, for the past decade.  The system was designed, among other reasons, to put scalpers at a disadvantage and keep them from dominating the line and buying up blocks of tickets - at the expense of everyday fans.

Response to Ticketmaster / Ticketsnow merger

Miami based Tickets of America President CEO Michael J Lipman is encouraged by publicly traded companies such as Ebay and IAC’s ability to foresee the opportunities in the billion dollar secondary resell market and believes they will pave the way for future merger and acquisitions.
The acquisition of Ticketsnow is a surprising move for Ticketmaster since the majority of tickets posted on Ticketsnow’s website are ticket brokers’ inventory, may of whom will now pull the plug by not listing them anymore as a result of this partnership. Ticketsnow’s business model caters to brokers and the majority of the web hits are from fellow brokers, not from fans listing inventory.

Ticketmaster, a dominant primary market ticket seller, actively encourages teams and concert promoters to buy and then sell their tickets on Ticketmaster’s secondary market exchange. As a result of losing several legislative battles in states such as New York and being investigated in states such as Missouri, Ticketmaster’s “Ticketexchange” and “auctions” have failed in the public eye. Ticketmaster must use the Ticketsnow brand name to market premium seats to events such as Hannah Montana to the secondary market which will inflate the prices.

The law of supply and demand dictates the price of tickets on the secondary market, consumers reselling their tickets on the Internet are a contributing factor for what the market price is, reputable companies such as www.ticketsofamerica.com , Ebay, and Stubhub encourage fans to buy/sell at market prices which often times causes prices to sell at less than face value. Ticketmaster, Promoters, Sports Teams, and Venue partners often hold back the supply of tickets which artificially inflates the prices by hyping the scarcity of supply and deceiving the public by saying “sold out.” This is not in the best interest of the consumer and prices are never going to be less than face value or at true market price.

Super Bowl Tickets Giveaway!!!

With only 3 weeks to go in the regular season and teams already clinching playoff berths, one can’t help but make Super Bowl predictions. Now I’ve been saying this for weeks, and any of my friends who probably weren’t paying attention can attest to it, that it’s going to be Packers and Patriots. The Patriots are going to be undefeated going into the Super Bowl and they will have to face the one man who has had a date with destiny all year - Brett Favre. And guess what? The Packers are going to win. The teams that have played close with the Pats this year - Indy, Philly, and Baltimore, have exposed weak spots in the Patriots. First off, you need a great performance from your quarterback. Not a problem. Second, you need shutdown corners. Enter Charles Woodson and Al Harris. Third, you need pressure on Tom Brady (preferably without blitzing). The Packers starting defensive line has combined for over 28 sacks. So I just want everyone to be clear on who they heard this from first - the Packers are going to defeat the Patriots in the Super Bowl (unless the Colts do it first).

Getting tickets to the Super Bowl is a whole other story. I imagine that every fan in Boston is salivating over seeing both a World Series victory and a Super Bowl victory in the same year (and then possibly going for the trifecta with the Celtics). Anyone who isn’t a Pats fan is still dying to go just for the chance to see history. Plus, it’s the Super Bowl, who wouldn’t want to go? Well, Jim Kelly probably doesn’t want to go, he HATES the Super Bowl. But you love it…

For you lucky sports bloggers out there, Tickets of America is offering a chance for one of you to win 2 tickets to the Super Bowl. That is not a misprint. Here is how you do it: First, write an article on your blog of at least 100 words talking about the Super Bowl. You can talk about it in any capacity that you like as long as the Super Bowl is the main topic. Second, put the link www.ticketsofamerica.com/super-bowl-tickets somewhere in the article. Finally, so that we know that you have posted your article, put a comment on this blog with the URL of the article you have written. Once you’ve done that, you are entered into the contest. Then there will be a drawing sometime in January for one winner who will be rewarded with TWO FREE TICKETS TO THE SUPER BOWL. Everyone say it together now, “We love you, Tickets of America.”

*If you have any questions about the contest, please take a look at the website at www.ticketsofamerica.com/giveaway

NBA Season Over - What now?

Now that the NBA season is over, what are my plans for the next 5 and 1/2 months?

- Watch the rest of the Gold Cup. I’ve become a casual fan of soccer, especially of CONCACAF competition. Once upon a time, I had no interest in the world’s most popular sport, none whatsoever. It has been a long, gradual process. Go USA!!! Get your soccer tickets here.

- Look forward to the NBA Draft, June 28. The Seattle Sonics, my favorite team, will be SUPER again with the No. 2 pick. If we draft Greg Oden, we should keep Rashard. If we draft Durant, we should sign and trade Rashard for Clippers forward Elton Brand. Portland will draft Oden and Clippers won’t deal Brand so “I’ll settle for” Durant and Rashard. We should be a fun team to watch. Sonics hired hotshot executive Sam Presti as its new GM. Presti was the assistant GM of the San Antonio Spurs. We still need a coach, but I like our direction. Sonics tickets are selling like Red Sox tickets, and hopefully all of this excitement will translate to a new state-of-the-art arena and the team staying where it belongs - the great city of Seattle.

- See how the Houston Rockets, my hometown team, continues to reinvent itself. I think the coaching change will make them more versatile on offense. In this league you have to be able to run the floor and set up in the half court. Look at the Spurs. We just traded for Mike James, who returns to Houston after two seasons. He fits in well with the new free-flowing system. He is a slasher and can be a reliable three-point shooter.

- Get ready for football season. The Cowboys come in with a new coach, new offense, new defense and hopefully a new Tony Romo. As you know, last season, Romo became a Media sweetheart overnight. All the premature attention plus his love interest with American Idol’s Carrie Underwood distracted him and hurt the team. He botched a potential game winning play for Dallas against the Seahawks in the NFC Wild card playoff game. He’s good, but still has a lot to prove. Hopefully, Terrell Owens will be utilized more in this offense. Get your NFL tickets here.

- Watch Rafa Nadal and Rog Federer in the US Tennis Open and Wimbledon and hopefully against each other in the Finals of these tournaments. I normally only watch tennis when one or both are involved in the match. Get your US Open Tennis tickets or Wimbledon tickets here.

- Watch the MLB All-Star Game, MLB playoffs and World Series. I don’t watch too much baseball during the regular season. Can the Astros make another dramatic second half turnaround? I doubt it. Unlike the past few years, we don’t have the talent to do it again.

- Probably catch some WWE Raw, WWE Smackdown and Lucha Libre. OK, so I admit professional wrestling is not sports. I’m fully aware that the matches are pre-determined but the stunts, choreographed fights and many of the injuries ARE REAL. Professional wrestling, though scripted, is still more dangerous than ice hockey, rugby or American football. I enjoy Mexican wrestling for the acrobatics, offbeat characters and mystique. I even have a mask collection. The glory days for WWE, at least for now, are over, but every now and again, I still tune in. Get your wrestling tickets here.

All of this should keep me busy until November. And you? One way to keep busy is to buy loads of tickets for any of these events. Click Tickets of America to get your fix.
