U.S Open greats: Steffi Graf

Steffi Graf

Stefanie Maria Graf is widely considered to be one of the greatest female tennis players in history. This phenomenal German player won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second among male and female players only to Margaret Court’s 24.

She also won 107 singles titles, which ranks her third on the list of most singles titles won during the open era, behind Martina Navratilova (167 titles) and Chris Evert (154 titles). Graf won five U.S. Open singles titles (1988, 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1996) and also reached, but lost, the event’s final in 1987, 1990 and 1994.

In 1988, Graf won the Olympic gold medal in singles and all four Grand Slam singles titles that year, becoming the first and only player to win the “Golden Slam.”

She was ranked the Women’s Tennis Association’s No. 1 player for a record 377 total weeks – the longest of any player, male or female, since rankings began – and is the only player to have won all four Grand Slam singles tournaments (Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open) at least four times each. Graf also holds the record (eight) for most years as year end number one.

She is the only singles player to have achieved a Calendar Year Grand Slam across all three types of tennis courts, as the other Calendar Year Grand Slams won by other players occurred when the Australian and US Opens were still played on grass.

Graf reached thirteen consecutive Grand Slam singles finals, from the French Open in 1987 through the French Open in 1990, winning nine of them.

She played in 36 Grand Slam singles tournaments from the 1987 French Open through the 1996 US Open, reaching the finals 29 times and winning 21 titles. She reached 31 Grand Slam singles finals, third overall behind Evert (34 finals) and Navratilova (32 finals).

Graf retired in 1999 while she was ranked World No. 3. She is married to the former World No. 1 men’s tennis player Andre Agassi.

U.S Open greats: Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova won 18 tennis Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles (an all-time record), and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Navratilova is one of just three women to have accomplished a career Grand Slam in singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles (called the Grand Slam “boxed set”).

Originally from the former Czechoslovakia, she lost her citizenship when she defected to the United States in 1975 at the age of 18 and became a U.S. citizen in 1981.

She won the women’s U.S. Open singles title four times, the doubles title nine times and the mixed doubles title three times.

In the 1980’s the U.S. Open belonged to Navratilova. In singles she won it in 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987 defeating players like Chris Evert (twice) and Steffi Graf. She also reached, but lost, the final in 1981, 1985 and 1989 when Steffi Graf defeated her to avenge her loss.

In doubles her most successful partner was Pam Shriver with whom she won the tournament four times (1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987). She also won it with American Billie Jean King in 1980 and in 1989 with Hana Mandlikova, whom as Navratilova was born in the former Czechoslovakia but after defecting her country started playing for Australia.

Navratilova capped off her career by winning the mixed doubles title at the 2006 US Open with Bob Bryan, her 41st Grand Slam doubles title (31 in women’s doubles and 10 in mixed doubles) and 177th overall. At the time, she was just over a month away from her 50th birthday. She also had won the event in 1985 with Heinz Gunthardtand and in 1987 with Emilio Sanchez

She holds the open era record for most singles titles (167) and doubles titles (177). She also recorded the longest winning streak in tennis history (74 consecutive matches) and three of the six longest winning streaks in women’s tennis history.

Navratilova reached 11 consecutive Grand Slam singles finals, second all-time to Steffi Graf’s 13. In women’s doubles, Navratilova and Pam Shriver won 109 consecutive matches and won all four Grand Slam titles in 1984.

On January 9, 2008, she had her Czech citizenship restored. She has stated that she has not renounced her American citizenship nor does she plan to do so and that the restoration of her Czech citizenship was not politically motivated.

U.S. Open greats: Jimmy Connors

Jimmy Connors

American James Scott “Jimmy” Connors held the top ranking for 160 consecutive weeks from July 29, 1974 through August 29, 1977 and an additional eight times during his career (a total of 268 weeks). He won eight Grand Slam singles titles (five of them at the U.S. Open) and two Grand Slam doubles titles (one at Wimbledon, one at the U.S. Open) with Ilie Nastase. He was also the mixed doubles runner-up with Chris Evert at the 1974 US Open.

He is considered to be one of the top male tennis players of all time. Also as  former coach of Andy Roddick, he helped the young American become the winner of the 2003 U.S. Open.

Turning pro in 1972, Connors won his first title that year at Jacksonville, FL.  Known for his fiery temperament Connors played more tournaments (401) and won more matches than any other male pro, 1,337-285 (.824), and, in fact, has never officially retired.

He has excelled at the the U.S. Open winning five championships, an open era record shared with Pete Sampras, but Connors was singular in winning on all three surfaces: grass (1974) and clay (1976) at Forest Hills, and hard (1978, 1982 and 1983) at Flushing Meadow. Connors is, therefore, one of only three men (Mats Wilander and Andre Agassi are the others) to have won a Grand Slam singles title on grass, hard, and clay courts.

Beginning in 1974, Connors played in five successive U.S. Open finals, the first man to do so since Bill Tilden between 1918 and 1925. Connors was beaten by Manolo Orantes in the 1975 finals and by Guillermo Vilas in 1977.

Connors was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998 and by the time he finished his career his  total of eight singles majors was second only to Bill Tilden’s 10 among American men, and tied with Fred Perry, Ke Rosewall, Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras for fourth on the all-time roll.
