McLaren F1 Team with Record Fine for Spying

Formula One team McLaren has been fined $100 million and has been stripped from their constructor points for allegedly using technical secret information from the Ferrari team. The situation began when secret documents were found at the house of Mike Coughlan - who is the teams chief designer- -now suspended of course- apparently handed to him by Nigel Stepney Ferrari’s former mechanic. This represent a huge blow to McLaren as they were leading the table by 23 points ahead of Ferrari.

However the punishment did not include McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, it was confirmed by the FIA. This is good news for rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton who leads the championship by 3 points from team mate Fernando Alonso with four races remaining.

Max Mosley the International Automobile Federation president was quoted as saying that “For the drivers we have made an exception because they have supplied evidence” to Italy’s ANSA news service.

Now the McLaren team is waiting for the full details of the FIA investigation to be published today as this well provide the basis for an appeal. “We believe we’ve got the grounds for an appeal but of course we’re going to wait for the findings of the FIA,” said Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren chief operating officer. “We’ll consider those carefully before we make that decision.”

Unfortunately the real looser with this spying scandal are not the drivers or the teams it’s the actual spectators who have been following one of the better seasons in F1 for years. This is particularly true as the competition between Hamilton and Alonso is so close between them. All this bad publicity puts a cloud in an otherwise good season.
