Oh well, my US Open American dream is over!. With the exit of Andy Roddick in 3 sets 6-7, 6-7, 2-6 -by swiss player and world’s # 1 Roger Federer-, America hopes for an Open win are over…at list in the men’s finals. Even though Andy was fired-up and produced some of his best tennis ever it proved not enough to threaten the phenomenal display by Federer in the US Open quarter final.
This is not saying he has no future in tennis, but like Pete Sampas said once - “Andy’s close, but he’s not quite there,” and “The guys (Federer and Nadal) are getting better and they’re younger. Andy’s going to have to get it going. The next few years are key for him.
Gone are the days when America could rejoice while watching the rivalry between Sampras and Aggasi or McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, but no matter who won America would still be the winner.
Sampras was “the man” of one of the greatest generations of American tennis. But not only him Andre Agassi, Michael Chang and Jim Courier, too, together they won 28 slams among them, Sampras alone won a record 14 of them.
Sampras and McEnroe held No. 1 rankings during their careers, but now there are only two Americans in the top 10 and four in the top 50.
Things aren’t much better among the women. While Serena and Venus Williams have resurrected their careers with wins at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, respectively, they’re the only American women in the top 40.
There are only three American men in the top 40. Andy Roddick, ranked fourth in the world, has one major title. James Blake, ranked ninth, has none. So for now it looks like we will have to wait for the next Tiger Woods of tennis to come along!
Do you think Andy has what it takes to become Americas future Pete Sampras?
