A Flying Start for the Colts at NFL Season Opener

With the trashing of the visiting New Orleans Saints (41-10), the NFL Super Bowl champions the Indianapolis Colts began the new NFL season on Thursday. Peyton Manning completed 18 of 30 pass attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns, including two for New Orleans born receiver Reggie Wayne.

With the smirk of a job well done Manning said “This is just one game, it takes 16 games, It sure was a good start but that’s all it is.” Manning is trying to become the first player in NFL history to score 25 touchdown passes in 10 consecutive seasons.

The Colts got off to a flying start with Manning throwing a 27 yard touchdown pass to receiver Marvin Harrison. This marks the 107th occasion Manning and Harrison, the most successful quarterback-receiver partnership in NFL history, had combined for a Touchdown.

The Saints, who last season just miss out by a game of meeting Indianapolis in the Superbowl, made a try early on. Cornerback Jason David recovered a mistake by Wayne and returned it for the score and both teams traded field goals to end the half at 10-10.

In the third quarter the Colts offense became more effective and with the help of Manning produced a pair of drives that paid off in the hands of Joseph Addai and Reggie Wayne to put them ahead 24-10.

For the fourth an early goal by Adam Vinatieri opened the quarter before Manning found Wayne in the end zone again, then Matt Giordano intercepted Saints quarterback Drew Brees and returned the ball 83 yards to finish off the game.
