
In 2004, No. 4 ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia won her one and so far only Grand Slam title – the Tennis US Open. That year, she defeated fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in straight sets. It was the second all-Russian final in Grand Slam history. Unfortunately, a year later, she became the first female champion to lose in the opening round of the US Open. She was ousted by Ekaterina Bychkova.
In 2007, the former US Open champion is due for a title in Flushing Meadows, New York. She has participated in five US Opens. Last year, Kuznetsova lost in the fourth round to Jelena Jankovic . She´s had some success in other Grand Slam tournaments. She was the runner-up at Roland Garros last year and a quarterfinalist twice at Wimbledon. Kuznetsova has also been a successful doubles player, winning the 2005 Australian Open and being ranked as high as third in the world (June 2004).
Kuznetsova was born June 27, 1985 in Moscow Russia. Her family was heavily involved in world-class cycling, but the sport didn´t interest her. She preferred tennis and moved to Spain at 13 to receive better training.
A few years later, she emerged as the top junior player on the planet at age 16.
She began traveling and training with Spanish tennis great Arantxa Sanchez Vicarrio and won her first professional singles and event and three doubles event with her new partner.
After Arantxa retired, she teamed up with Arantxa´s partner Martina Navratilova. Together, the duo won four titles in 2003. She also played doubles for Russia in the 2004 Olympics. After a key singles victory over Justine Henin, she landed in the top 20. In her young career, the 22-year-old Russian has won 233 matches and lost 100. In 2007, her record is 38-13. Since becoming a pro, she has earned a total of $7,159,056 and $1,005,110 as a singles player this year.
