Top Russian player could build on past US Open success

Russian Nikolay Davydenko will look to build on his previous Tennis US Open success in 2007. The fifth ranked player in the world has participated in six US Opens and reached the semifinals last year.

Davydenko has come close to winning a Grand Slam title several times. He has been a semifinalist twice at Roland Garros and a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open the last three years.

Davydenko was born June 2, 1981 in Severodonezk, Ukraine. At 7, he was introduced to the game of tennis. After turning 11, he left the Ukraine for Volgograd, Russia where Eduard his older brother lived. He believed Russia would offer more opportunities to become a tennis pro.

There, he and Eduard practiced for four years and developed their skills. After he turned 15, they left for Germany. In Europe, there were more tournaments and more money. Since 1999 he has represented Russia after receiving citizenship.
He turned pro the same year and began his career on the Futures Tour and captured a title. He debuted with ATP in Amsterdam and reached the semifinals.

His Grand Slam debut came at the 2001 Australian Open. He reached the second round. He won his first ATP title in Adelaide and in 2004 captured two more titles.
Has won a career total of 247 matches with 184 losses. In 2007, he has won 38 and lost 23. He has earned a career total of $6,310,906 and $1,097,925 in 2007.

He currently resides in Volgograd, Russia.
