Djokovic hopes US Open is first Grand Slam title

Third ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia hopes to capture his first Grand Slam title at the 2007 US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York August 27 – Sept. 9.

A semifinals appearance at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year is the closest Djokovic has come to tasting championship glory.

Could this be a sign of bigger and better things for the 20-year-old Serb?

Djokovic was born on May 22, 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia. He was introduced to the game of tennis at the age of four.

As a young man, Djokovic excelled in the sport and won the support of his family who, initially, had other aspirations for him. His father, uncle and aunt all skied professionally and wanted him to follow in their footsteps.

Although they disagreed at first, Djokovic credits his family for much of his success. In fact, his younger brothers Marko and Djorde are tennis players too.

Djokovic´s tennis idol as a kid was none other than tennis legend Pete Sampras.

When he was 12, Djokovic began to train at the Niki Pilic Academy in Munich until he went back to Belgrade.

Djokovic competed as a junior, advancing to the Australian Open junior singles and doubles semifinals in 2004.

He is currently coached by Marian Vajda.
Djokovic prefers to play on hard court, which happens to be the US Open surface, but considers himself a versatile player, capable of winning on any surface.
Djokovic has been a pro since 2003 and has won a total of 105 matches with 45 losses. So far this year, the Serb has 52 wins and 13 losses.
Djokovic has earned a career total of $3,248,000 and $2,328,075 in 2007.
He currently resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
