Rafael Nadal of Spain will try to prove that he´s more than a clay court specialist at the US Tennis Open in 2007.
Winner of three straight French Open titles since 2005, Rafa has yet to win a Grand Slam championship on any other surface.
Nadal has participated in four US Opens. The closest he´s come to a hard court championship at the tournament was a quarterfinals appearance in 2006.
To his credit, Nadal reached the last Wimbledon Final on grass, but lost to No. 1 ranked Roger Federer in a gritty five-set match. Nevertheless, Nadal´s performance on grass demonstrated that the gap is closing between the top two players in the world.
At four years young, Rafa picked up a racket and tennis ball and from the very beginning has been coached by his Uncle Toni.
Rafa improved his game over the years and participated in his one and only junior Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon in 2002. Here, he reached the semi-finals.
Nadal turned pro in 2001 and at 19-years-old, he became the third teenager to reach the No. 2 position after Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg (18-years-old, respectively)
Rafa has won 242 career matches with 60 losses. In 2007, his record is 242-9. He has earned a career total of $12,592,374 and in 2007 has garnered $4,224,310 as a singles player.
Overall, Nadal holds a record 62 straight wins on clay and has 17 career titles including Masters Series titles and ATP titles.
