The MLS–Beckhamania!

David Beckham has arrived to America and he brought Posh Spice along….oh no! not again, is there going to be another album by the Spices? We’ve had enough, let’s not let that happen again, please! Hopefully Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes keep her busy and away from the microphone. Or better yet, hope she has plenty to do in that twenty million dollar house they just purchased.

As for Beckham, many Hollywood stars came to welcome him in his MLS debut this past Sunday in Los Angeles. From the moment he arrived it was a circus. After final count, there were more media personnel than the Super Bowl…what?  Unbelievable! Packed Home Depot Stadium and a record media, for what?
He’s definitely a marketing machine, all over soccer and Adidas commercials. He’s won many English Premier League Championships with those great Manchester United teams along with a Champions league title, and he finally won a title with Real Madrid this past June. Hasn’t had the success he’s hoped for with the National Team, but a great career nonetheless. Probably one of the best at setting up goals with his lethal bends and free kicks.
His prime has past him, that was many years ago. He’s definitely far from that player with the skills that made him famous. He’s definitely washed up, anybody would agree with that.

In the states, fans seem not to care or aren’t conscious enough to know that he’ll offer nothing to soccer but exposure to the world, but if the quality of soccer doesn’t get better how can you expect people to come to games and the sport’s quality to get better? And if quality does not improve, then world class players would not think about coming to play in their prime years, which is the main reason the MLS brought him over. Bringing players after their prime would not make a league grow, it’ll delay up and comers’ development and make the league lose credibility.
After this experience, the MLS should learn some things about the leagues in Europe and pay those players who deserve their paychecks for what they do on the field, and not what they do with their hair stylist.

We’ll see how everything turns out….If you’re looking for tickets to any of Beckham’s games, feel free to contact me at 1-888-383-1515

Yes, ESPN increased the coverage, especially of LA Galaxy, people are coming to the games and ratings have gone up. This is one of the things the MLS wanted to get out of the Beckham deal. The one thing that will be hard to accomplish, as I mentioned on the blog, is to improve the quality of soccer played and bring players at their prime to the MLS. One thing I have to say about the whole Beckham scam, he’s played only 15 minutes total. He warms up so much, he’ll toast one of these days! Soccer wise, it was not a good match!
