Surprises at the Sony Ericsson Open

 Maria Sharapova

Unlike the four teams remaining in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the final four of the Sony Ericsson Open are unlikely contenders for the men’s title.

The most notable dark horse is unranked Guillermo Canas who upset the man Tiger Woods recently called,”The most dominating athlete in professional sports.” Yes, Canas proved to be the kryptonite that brought down Roger Federer, the Superman of Tennis. Now, the Argentine finds himself in the semis against No. 7 Ivan Ljubicic.

The other semifinalists also pulled nice upsets, albeit less dramatic. No. 10 Novak Kjokovic of Serbia beat second ranked Rafael Nadal in two sets and No. 12 Andy Murray of Gibraltar topped third ranked Andy Roddick.

On the woman’s side, American Serena Williams continues to look like a former number one player. She defeated the current number one player Maria Sharapova convincingly in the fourth round. She continues her mastery of Sharapova that began at the Australian Open when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

It was her third Aussie Open win and eighth overall grand slam title. Back to Sony Ericsson. Later, she defeated no. 14 Shahar Peer of Israel. Williams will confront No. 2 Justine Henin of Belgium in the finals. I look for Williams to dominate in this match and reaffirm her place as one of the elite women’s players in the world. There’s still a little time to get tickets for these remaining games from Tickets of America.

Early excitement at the Sony Ericsson Open

 Roger Federer

The first week at the Sony Ericsson Open was filled with dominating performances by top-ranked players and surprise upsets of others. The man who Tiger Woods recently called ” the most dominating athlete in professional sports,” supported his good friend’s assessment.

Roger Federer made easy work of American Sam Querrey in two sets in the second round and continues to look invincible. Federer’s nememis, No. 3 Andy Roddick won his first two matches and already finds himself in the fourth round. However, fellow American No. 8 James Blake took an early exit after his second round loss to unranked Florent Serra of France.

Likewise, No. 8 Tommy Hass of Germany and No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez both lost to unranked players in the first two rounds. If I said these two tennis phenoms didn’t underachieve, but just had bad games, I would be prevaricating.

No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia closed the deal with Venus Williams in three sets after dropping the first in her second round match. No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia also had a tough time winning in three hard-fought sets. No. 5 Martina Hingis of Switzerland and No. 13 Serena Williams of the US won their second round match-ups hands down. Hingis later lost in three sets to unranked Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round.

No. 2 Justine Henin and fellow Belgian No. 4 Kim Clijsters won their third round matches, while the later had an easier time. Clijsters came back from one down to win in three sets. No. 7 Jelena Jankovic was ousted in the third round by 32-ranked Mara Santangelo. Russians Nadia Petrova and Anna Chakvetadze won their second round matches. Petrova had a more difficult time, winning in three close sets. Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy gave No. 6 Petrova all she could handle.

If you missed the first week of this extraordinary tennis tournament, you missed out. However, this doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. There’s still time to redeem yourself. You have the opportunity to catch the second half of the event held on the beautiful island of Key Biscayne close to Miami, Florida.

Sometimes four legs are better than two.

When you think of the greatest athletes in the world, a four-legged creature probably doesn’t come to mind. Consider the top race horses at the Kentucky Derby. Any healthy colt or filly could outrun any Olympic sprinter on Any Given Saturday. A race horse has yet to win an ESPY award, though Giacomo, surprise winner of the 2005 Kentucky Derby, was close. His victory at Louisville was nominated for “upset of the year.” Is it realistic to think that a horse could win the ESPY’s male athlete of the year award? Sure. Imagine if the late great Barbaro had recuperated to full strength to win his second consecutive Kentucky Derby. Anyhow, what I’m trying to get at is that you should learn to appreciate thoroughbreds if you don’t already. Going to one of the big three races is a big first step. Tickets of America sells Kentucky Derby tickets and Kentucky Derby packages and also Belmont Stakes tickets and Breeder’s Cup tickets on demand. Here’s your opportunity to learn something new.
