Unlike the four teams remaining in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the final four of the Sony Ericsson Open are unlikely contenders for the men’s title.
The most notable dark horse is unranked Guillermo Canas who upset the man Tiger Woods recently called,”The most dominating athlete in professional sports.” Yes, Canas proved to be the kryptonite that brought down Roger Federer, the Superman of Tennis. Now, the Argentine finds himself in the semis against No. 7 Ivan Ljubicic.
The other semifinalists also pulled nice upsets, albeit less dramatic. No. 10 Novak Kjokovic of Serbia beat second ranked Rafael Nadal in two sets and No. 12 Andy Murray of Gibraltar topped third ranked Andy Roddick.
On the woman’s side, American Serena Williams continues to look like a former number one player. She defeated the current number one player Maria Sharapova convincingly in the fourth round. She continues her mastery of Sharapova that began at the Australian Open when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
It was her third Aussie Open win and eighth overall grand slam title. Back to Sony Ericsson. Later, she defeated no. 14 Shahar Peer of Israel. Williams will confront No. 2 Justine Henin of Belgium in the finals. I look for Williams to dominate in this match and reaffirm her place as one of the elite women’s players in the world. There’s still a little time to get tickets for these remaining games from Tickets of America.
