AFC Championship: familiar foes, unlikely participants

The 2007 AFC Championship game features two familiar, yet unlikely participants. The Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots have been two of the AFC’s premier teams the last several years. Yet, following this season, these two teams were not the favorites to advance to the Super Bowl, let alone the conference championship.

The teams have a storied history together. The Patriots have defeated the Colts twice en route to two of their three Super Bowl victories the past five years. Following the 2003 season, the Pats defeated the Colts in the conference championship, and following the 2004 season, New England wiped the floor with Indianpolis in a divisional playoff.

The latest and possibly greatest match-up will happen this Sunday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Unlike their previous playoff meetings, Manning and the Colts have home field advantage and a stronger defense. As for the Pats, New England always has Tom Brady and a team that rises to the occassion when called to do so.
